Southampton is a major south English port city with 220,000 inhabitants. It is located about 130 km south-west of London and is easily accessible by car via the A-road, rail and bus. London Heathrow and Gatwick airports offer numerous regular air links to major European cities. There are also smaller airports in Southampton and Bournemouth.

The University of Southampton was founded in 1862 and is one of the UK's most research-intensive universities. It is part of the influential Russel Group, an association of 24universities known for a shared focus on research and a reputation for academic achievement, which together receive two-thirds of the UK's public research funding. It is listed amongst the top 100 of the world’s best universities. In addition, the University of Southampton consists of five faculties with over 17,000 undergraduate and 7,000 post graduate students. The Faculty of Medicine was founded in 1971 and was the first medical faculty in the UK to introduce early student-patient contact from the first year of study.

The demand for study places at the Faculty of Medicine is high, indicated by the high number of applicants for 260 places per year (3,000 applicants each year). Thanks to the cooperation with Kassel, there are at least 24 additional study places available exclusively through the BM (EU) program

The Faculty of medicine runs a number of medical programmes which cater for school leavers, graduates, widening access and international students as well as the BM(EU) for European students. Please see https://www.southampton.ac.uk/medicine/index.page

The main educational institution in Southampton is the renowned Southampton General Hospital, founded in 1900. Southampton General Hospital is part of the public University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

The trust's 7,500 employees treat 115,000 inpatients and semi- inpatients and 350,000 outpatients in 1,100 beds each year.

The University of Southampton regularly hosts Open Days at the University of Southampton for future students. Further information and a registration form can be found here.
